Send/receive text messages from your PC using MightyText

MightyText is a service that is currently in beta. Its purpose is simple. It allows you to send a receive text messages from your computer. MightyText also uses your existing mobile number and contacts to streamline the process. It can be restrictive, but it does work and can be very convenient for people who stay glued to their computer.

The only way to try MightyText is to sign up for the beta on its website. Before you sign up, make you meet the two major requirements. You must have an Android phone running Android 2.2 or higher and use the Google Chrome web browser. Chrome is required because you have to download a Chrome extension for everything to work. Other requirements include signing up using the same email address that is associated with your phone’s Google account.
Here’s how MightyText works after everything is set up. Whenever you are sent a text message, a notification pops up at the bottom right of your computer screen. At that point, you can choose to respond to those texts right from your computer. You can also send messages to anyone on your contact list.
MightyText just makes creating and responding to text messages quicker. If you get a text while on the computer, you have to stop what you’re doing, pick up your phone and answer it. Sometimes a simple text can turn into a full blown texting conversation. Being able to conduct that conversation without taking your eyes off the computer screen is very convenient.
You’re still paying for the texts you receive based on the plan you’ve set up with your wireless carrier.
There are still some things to be desired from MightyText. The user interface leaves a lot to be desired and you can’t send picture messages either. Another pet peeve of mine is that my phone’s notification light continues to blink as the messages build up. In the end, you’ll still have to manually check your phone’s messages to remove the notification.

Using iPad or iPod with multiple computers

Summary You can manage your iPad or iPod with multiple computers1,2 as long as you have set the device to “Manually manage music.”
Products Affected

iPod, iPad, iPod mini, iPod touch, iPod nano, iPod classic
Modes By default, your device is set to “Automatically sync songs…,” sometimes called automatic mode. To transfer music from multiple computers, your device must be set to “Manually manage music,” sometimes referred to as manual mode.
Automatic Mode When your device is set to automatic mode, iTunes automatically updates your device’s music library whenever you connect it to your computer. iTunes transfers new songs you’ve added and erases songs you’ve removed. The first computer you connect your device to is its “home” computer. The music library from that computer is copied to your device. When you connect your device to a different computer, an alert box appears with this message:
If you want to delete the music library on your device and make the new computer its “home” computer, choose Erase and Sync. iTunes will delete all songs and playlists on your device, and then will copy the music library and playlists from the new home computer to your device.
If you want to move the iTunes Store purchases on your device to the new computer, choose “Transfer Purchases.” The new computer must be set up with your iTunes Store account and authorized to play your iTunes Store purchases in order to transfer your iTunes Store purchases.
Manual Mode5 If you want to keep the music library on your device, but copy songs or playlists from the music library on the second computer, click Cancel when the dialog box appears, and then set your device to manual mode.
Change the device synchronization mode to manual mode in iTunes:
1. Open iTunes4, if necessary.
2. Select your device under Devices in the menu on the left-hand side of iTunes.
iPod selected under devices
3. Click the Summary tab.
4. Click “Manually manage music and videos” to enable that option.
Click “Manually manage music and videos”
5. Click OK in the resulting dialog box.
6. Click Apply. It is normal for your device to take a few seconds to change from automatic mode to manual mode.
When in manual mode, to add songs or playlists, drag them from iTunes to the device icon in the sidebar. To remove songs or playlists, select them on the device in iTunes and press the delete key. You can also create playlists directly on the device.
Notes:
* Synchronization generally occurs only in one direction, from your computer to your device. However, if you are legally allowed to transfer song files, you can use your iPod as a hard disk3. An exception is the transfer purchases feature, which allows you to restore purchased iTunes content to an authorized computer from your device.
Additional Information
1. Using an iPod formatted for Macintosh on a Windows computer is not supported. Using an iPod formatted for Windows on a Macintosh computer is not supported. Learn how to determine your iPod’s hard disk format. To change the iPod format, restore your iPod using iTunes. iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch) cannot have their disk format modified, but will work on both Windows and Macintosh computers. Find more information on managing content manually on iPhone, iPad, or iPod.
2. Issues may occur leading to data corruption or data loss if you regularly sync contacts, calendars, notes, or bookmarks between multiple computers using iTunes and your iPad or iPod touch. Syncing once to move your data to a new computer should not cause these issues. See this article for more information.
3. iOS devices (iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch) cannot be used as a hard disk.
4. If you’re not using iTunes 7 or later, see this article.
5. iPod shuffle and iPhone are intended for use with a single computer. You cannot load music from multiple computers or iTunes libraries onto iPod shuffle and iPhone like you can with other devices.

Magic Light For Keyboard

Ever wondered how to make your keyboard light blink like  disco lights or glow in a sequence like Diwali lights glow? You can do this by just writing a simple Visual Basic script. Don’t worry I will provide the script, and all you have to do is copy and paste. That’s it and you can turn your ordinary keyboard into disco lights enabled keyboard. :)

Copy the following script into a notepad, then save that file with an extension “.vbs” (Visual Basic users may already be familiar with it). After that just double click on the new file, with a script like icon and you can see the magic, lights will start glowing in a sequence or randomly.

For random glowing of lights
Set wshShell =wscript.CreateObject(“WScript.Shell”)
dowscript.sleep 100wshshell.sendkeys “{CAPSLOCK}”wshshell.sendkeys “{NUMLOCK}”wshshell.sendkeys “{SCROLLLOCK}”loop
For glowing in sequence
Set wshShell =wscript.CreateObject(“WScript.Shell”)dowscript.sleep 200wshshell.sendkeys “{CAPSLOCK}”wscript.sleep 100wshshell.sendkeys “{NUMLOCK}”wscript.sleep 50
wshshell.sendkeys “{SCROLLLOCK}”loop
To end this disco of lights, you need to end a process called “wscript.exe”, for ending the process open Task Manager and end process the required process.

Make Your Computer Run Faster

There are a number of steps that you can take to attempt to speed up your system. Most require simply tweaking the software you already have, not adding more.
However, if the information you’ve provided is accurate, the problem with your system is much more fundamental.

I just checked a Window XP with SP2 box, and Microsoft calls out a minimum RAM requirement of 128Meg. Not only are you below that, but I consider Microsoft’s requirement totally impractical if you actually want to do anything with your machine. I would recommend a minimum of 256Meg of RAM, and ideally more. In machines that I’ve recently purchased, I’ve configured them with 1 or 2 Gigabytes of RAM.
Windows XP loves RAM. If you have 256Meg of RAM or less, that would be the first place I’d turn to in order to increase your system’s effective speed.
“Windows XP loves RAM.”
The next place I’d look is at all the software that loads and runs automatically when you start your machine. If you’ve never adjusted it, and you’ve simply accepted default installations for software you’ve installed, it’s likely there’s a lot of software actually running that doesn’t need to be. Unfortunately identifying what is, and is not, required can be a difficult process, since it depends on how you specifically use your computer.
My previous article What’s all this stuff running after I boot Windows? will help you at least identify what gets launched automatically when you log in. The article What’s this program running on my machine? includes some of the steps I go through when I try to understand exactly what a program is, or what it’s trying to do. (In short … Google is your friend.)
Windows Services is another area to examine, but unfortunately things get even more obscure. There are lists of services that you can review and determine for yourself if they are appropriate for your machine.
Other things you could also try to increase your system’s performance include:
  • Defragment your hard disk(s).
  • Clear your Internet Explorer cache.
  • Consider using a lower resolution, or a lower color depth for your monitor.
  • Consider using a plain color instead of a picture for your desktop – the picture takes up memory that could be used for other things. (This is also extra important if you connect to your machine via Remote Desktop.)

How to Protect Computer From Viruses

Protect a Computer From Viruses If you think your computer may be infected, take all necessary steps to clear your system and avoid infecting other computers.
Instructions
Things You’ll Need

* Anti-virus Softwares
1.
* 1
Be cautious about what disks and files you accept from other people.
* 2
Don’t reuse disks that have been in other computers, don’t download files from insecure sites, and don’t open e-mail attachments unless you are expecting them. Be wary of messages and attachments, even from people you know, with vague subject lines and contents, such as ‘Check this’ or ‘See these pics!!!’
* 3
Obtain an antivirus program to more safely share disks, download files from the Internet and open e-mail attachments.
* 4
If your system gets a virus, visit your virus-scan software manufacturer’s Web site and install any virus updates that are available. Then run the software. The software may not be able to delete the virus, but it may be able to identify it.
* 5
Search the Web for information regarding your specific virus by typing the name of the virus or its associated file into a search engine, followed by the word ‘virus.’ For example, ‘Melissa virus,’ ‘BubbleBoy virus,’ and so on.
* 6
Download and install any software patches or other programs that will help you eliminate the virus. Or follow any instructions you find on deleting the virus manually.
* 7
Run another virus scan to make sure the virus was dealt with properly.
* 8
Employ extra caution when you receive attachments that end in the commonly used extensions .doc, .exe, .com, .xls or .ppt. Never open attachments that end in .vbs or .js, since a typical user would never have a reason to open these files.

How to make a computer faster: 6 ways to speed up your PC

1. Remove spyware, and help protect your computer from viruses

Spyware collects personal information without letting you know and without asking for permission. From the websites you visit to user names and passwords, spyware can put you and your confidential information at risk. In addition to privacy concerns, spyware can hamper your computer’s performance. To combat spyware, you might want to consider using the PC safety scan from Windows Live OneCare. This scan is a free service that helps check for and remove viruses.

Download Microsoft Security Essentials for free to help guard your system in the future from viruses, spyware, adware, and other malicious software (also known as malware). Microsoft Security Essentials acts as a spyware removal tool and includes automatic updates to help keep your system protected from emerging threats.
The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool is another utility that checks computers running Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003 for infections by specific, prevalent malicious software, including Blaster, Sasser, and Mydoom, and helps remove any infection found.

2. Free up disk space

The Disk Cleanup tool helps you to free up space on your hard disk to improve the performance of your computer. The tool identifies files that you can safely delete and then enables you to choose whether you want to delete some or all of the identified files.
Use Disk Cleanup to:
  • Remove temporary Internet files.
  • Delete downloaded program files, such as Microsoft ActiveX controls and Java applets.
  • Empty the Recycle Bin.
  • Remove Windows temporary files, such as error reports.
  • Delete optional Windows components that you don’t use.
  • Delete installed programs that you no longer use.
  • Remove unused restore points and shadow copies from System Restore.
Tip: Typically, temporary Internet files take the most amount of space because the browser caches each page you visit for faster access later.
To use Disk Cleanup:

Windows 7 users

Windows Vista users

Windows XP users

3. Speed up access to data

Disk fragmentation slows the overall performance of your system. When files are fragmented, the computer must search the hard disk as a file is opened (to piece it back together). The response time can be significantly longer.
Disk Defragmenter (sometimes shortened to Defrag by users) is a Windows utility that consolidates fragmented files and folders on your computer’s hard disk so that each occupies a single space on the disk. With your files stored neatly end to end, without fragmentation, reading and writing to the disk speeds up.
When to run Disk Defragmenter
In addition to running Disk Defragmenter at regular intervals (weekly is optimal), there are other times you should run it, too, such as when:
  • You add a large number of files.
  • Your free disk space totals 15 percent or less.
  • You install new programs or a new version of the Windows operating system.
To use Disk Defragmenter:

Windows 7 users

Windows Vista users

Windows XP users

Running Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter on a regular basis is a proven way to help keep your computer running quickly and efficiently. If you’d like to learn how to schedule these tools and others to run automatically, please read Speed up your PC: Automate your computer maintenance schedule.

4. Detect and repair disk errors

In addition to running Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter to optimize the performance of your computer, you can check the integrity of the files stored on your hard disk by running the Error Checking utility.
As you use your hard drive, it can develop bad sectors. Bad sectors slow down hard disk performance and sometimes make data writing (such as file saving) difficult or even impossible. The Error Checking utility scans the hard drive for bad sectors and scans for file system errors to see whether certain files or folders are misplaced.
If you use your computer daily, you should run this utility once a week to help prevent data loss.

Run the Error Checking utility:

5. Learn about ReadyBoost

If you’re using Windows 7 or Windows Vista, you can use ReadyBoost to speed up your system. A new concept in adding memory to a system, it allows you to use non-volatile flash memory—like a USB flash drive or a memory card—to improve performance without having to add additional memory.

6.  Upgrade  to  Windows 7

If you try all the previous remedies and your computer still isn’t as fast as you would like it to be, you may want to consider updating to Windows 7.
If the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor determines that your computer can’t run Windows 7 and you still have the need for speed, it might be time for a new computer. There are some great deals on new computers right now:

Tips and tricks to speed up your Windows XP compute

Tips and tricks to speed up your Windows XP compute

The problem I hear most from my clients is “My computer is slow”. There can be many reasons your computer is “slow”. In this article I will describe some simple techniques for speeding up your Windows XP installations. The main culprit for a “slow” computer is insufficient RAM. There are several settings you can change on your computer to speed up applications and the basic operation of your system. These tips are geared toward basic computer users who don’t understand how computers operate and what makes them “slow”.

Windows XP is a beast. It uses a lot of your system’s RAM just to run and load windows. Many new computers since the release of XP only come with 256MB or 512MB of RAM. So while your computer may be “new” it has barely enough RAM to just run Windows. Add your web browser, Microsoft Office, or some other applications and soon your computer will slow to a crawl. So first things first, check your RAM. If you want to do any “real” work in Windows I suggest a minimum of 1GB of RAM. (To check your RAM, right click on “My Computer”, select “Properties”. Your RAM should be listed in the information on this screen)
So you say you have enough RAM? Well next thing you can do to speed up your system is disable all the animated menus and eye candy that shows up on your screen. Don’t worry, windows will still work great…infact it will work better. To disable effects that make your computer run slow: Right click on your desktop and select “Properties”. click the “Effects” button. Remove all of the check marks in the boxes and click OK, ok. Next right click on “My Computer”, select “Properties”. click the “Advanced” tab and the “Settings” button. Choose “Adjust for best performance” and click OK, ok. Your desktop will now look like the old Windows 98?ish desktop. No more fancy XP eye-candy, but at least now your computer will run a little faster.
The next biggest thing I see that causes PC slow-down is running Anti-virus software like Norton or McAfee. These anti-virus solutions run “real-time system monitoring” and scans when you are using your computer. In my opinion most anti-virus software is worthless. You can protect your system through safe computing practices, using FireFox as your web browser, and updating windows regularly. Occasional virus scans are still recommended, but having an anti-virus program running constantly in the background will reduce most systems to a slow crawl at times. Disabling the “real-time” protection in your anti-virus should speed up your system.
Having many applications in your startup will also slow your system down. Most of the applications that start automatically when you load windows are unnecessary. So if you have a lot of programs running in your system tray when windows starts, chances are you could do without most of them. To disable the startup of applications click “Start” and then “run”. Type: msconfig and press OK. This should bring up the “System Configuration Utility”, click on the Startup tab. You can safely disable most of the applications that are selected. If you reboot and encounter issues with any applications, you may re-enable the startup setting for that particular application. With fewer applications running at start-up, you will have more memory to work with your applications. Just run applications as you need them, instead of starting many at once when you log into Windows.
While still in the “System Configuration Utility” click on services. Disable “Indexing Service”. This service indexes all the files that are on your computer. It does this so that if search for something on your computer, it will search faster by scanning the index lists. If you don’t search your computer often, or even if you do search often, this system service is completely unnecessary and will slow down your computer more and more over time. Once you’ve disabled everything click OK on the “System Configuration Utility” and choose “Reboot Now”. After your computer reboots a window will pop-up that mentions that “the configuration has been modified etc…” you can click “don’t show this in the future” and it won’t come up again next time you reboot.
There are many other tips and tricks you can use to speed up your computer. This article is geared towards those who aren’t “geeks”. I haven’t really listed anything that could cause permanent damage to your system (provided you follow my instructions). If you are up for more advanced techniques which include editing the registry, please search Google and be careful.

How To Use Your PSP WiFi Scanner To Find A Wireless Internet Hotspot

How To Use Your PSP WiFi Scanner To Find A Wireless Internet Hotspot

Internet has become an incredibly important facet of mobile devices. It’s almost unthinkable to have a cellphone without 3G or GPRS and a WiFi adapter for wireless internet is included on all things portable.
Sony’s PSP was a pioneer in this digital stretch. It was one of the first gaming devices that looked beyond the games; including music and movie playback, and WiFi capability.

Although the PlayStation Portable has been out for a while now, its web browser is still powerful enough to enjoy browsing the web. It supports Flash and Java, and its capabilities go way beyond most mobile devices.
Since the PSP uses WiFi, you will need a wireless access point to connect to the internet. Most people have a wireless router at home these days, otherwise you can purchase a USB WiFi transmitter for your computer, but when you’re on the move you’ve got to improvise. Below are two ways to use that built-in PSP WiFi scanner and find a hot spot on the go.
Note that there are two kinds of unencrypted hot spots: public hot spots – like the one at Starbucks or in the park, meant to share an internet connection , albeit freely – and unsecured private networks, which you can access because there’s no password needed.Connecting to a private network without prior consent from the owner is illegal in most countries, and can result in heavy fines.
Use Your PSP WiFi Scanner:
our PSP has a built in WiFi scanner, which you can use to search for hot spots. Doing so is very easy. Make sure the WLAN switch, as depicted below, is turned on.
From the main menu, go to Settings -> Network Settings. A connection wizard will pop up.
First you’ll be presented with a choice between Ad Hoc and Infrastructure Mode. We’ll choose Infrastructure Mode, because the former is used to connect two PSPs without using an existing network.
If this is your first time running the wizard on that location, and I’m assuming it is, you need to create a new connection. Otherwise choose one from the list.
You’ll be asked to enter a few basic details, like the connection name. Changing this is not at all required, but would be useful if you plan on using this same hotspot in the future.
You’ll be asked whether you want to scan for available access points, or enter the network details manually. We’re of course using the scan function.
As you can see in the screenshot below, your PSP will present you with all available access points, ranked by signal strength. Unless you know the network, you’ll need to choose one with security attribute – none.
It often happens that there are no access points directly available. You can move to another position, go back (by pressing O) and scan again. Good places to look for public hotspots are train stations, big malls, bistros and other (preferably big) public places.
Alternative: Use Road Dog WiFi Sniffer (Homebrew)
Note that this application is homebrew – which basicly means it’s cooked up by an amateur software developer. Sony doesn’t allow you to run homebrew on your PSP by default though so you’ll have to put a custom firmware on your device first. Doing so will open a whole new world of community software development, including translation apps, PDF readers and GameBoy emulators.
Road Dog is a homebrew PSP application that allows you to sniff for WiFi connections. This means that, unlike when using the default PSP WiFi scanner, your device will keep rescanning for potential access points. By monitoring the signal connection, you can use it to monitor and even locate hotspots while walking or driving around.
